Unwarranted stop signs breed disrespect for all signs. We frequently tell the public about the dangers of unwarranted stop signs in an effort to minimize and standardize the installation process. The MUTCD also lists specific guidelines for stop signs, suggesting the appropriate locations for them. But will drivers truly ignore stop signs if not warranted? We set out to determine the compliance rates of stop signs under various conditions - two-way or all-way stop, local or collector roads, high and low volume roads.
In this Traffic Corner Tuesday session, we discuss our research into stop sign compliance and initial findings about how drivers react to different characteristics.
